What is Aqualyx?

Aqualyx is an injectable compound made from the deoxycholate family of acids. The acids present in Aqualyx cause fat destruction in the body. Aqualyx is used for body contouring and is licensed for use in the UK for localised or spot removal of fat from areas such as the chin, knees, hips, thighs or under the buttocks.  It is generally regarded as safe but It is not a weight loss solution and is only suitable for smaller, stubborn pockets of fat, not large area fat reduction.

How does it work?

Aqualyx is a non-surgical way of body-shaping. The gel-based solution is injected into areas of stubborn unwanted fat. The solution works by disrupting the surface of the fat cells, causing them to weaken and become permeable. The fat is then broken down and absorbed by the body before being excreted. Aqualyx is a permanent solution to stubborn fat pockets assuming the person having the treatment doesn’t gain weight after the treatment.

What areas can be treated?

Aqualyx is suitable for treating: double chin, jowls, upper arms, armpits, waist, hips, knees, chest, inner tights, buttocks as well as folds on the back.

How many treatments will I need?

Some people may see an improvement after 1-2 session but up to 8 may be required depending on the amount of fat in the area. Chins, where there is less fat for example, may require one treatment while hips or thighs may require repeated treatments.
Treatments will usually be spaced 4 - 6 weeks apart.

What is the downtime?

There may be redness, bruising and swelling that could last up to 48-72 hours. You can take over-the-counter painkillers but not anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen as they will work against the treatment. Aftercare leaflets are emailed to all clients after treatment.

Is it safe?

It is regarded as a safe treatment. The Aqualyx manufacturer has reported no major side effects.

Who is it suitable for?

Aqualyx is generally regarded as safe for most people but it is not recommended for clinically overweight people, or people who are under 18 or over 60 years of age.
It is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women or people with liposdystrophy or diabetes.

How long does a treatment take?

A typical session can last anywhere between 30-45 mins depending on size of the area being treated.

What is the cost?

Between £150 - £250 per session depending on area treated.

Is it worth it?

Aqualyx is not a treatment for weight loss. It is a treatment for those looking to remove stubborn areas of fat that don’t go with diet and exercise. Aqualyx doesn't replace a healthy lifestyle but is often used to compliment weight loss and contour areas of the body. Aqualyx can be effective at removing small pockets of stubborn fat but it is not an alternative for liposuction for large areas of fat removal and is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. The results will last if a stable weight is maintained.
